After writing the first six episodes of the Squarehead web series, we put out a call looking for crew. We met and soon hired J. Trevi Albin. He had a wide variety of professional experience and he was passionate about telling an independent story.

We used Craigslist as a way to find filmmakers in the community. This was my first excursion into filmmaking and we didn’t have some of the resources we have now.

We posted a casting call via Craigslist as well.

A couple of our crew came from personal connections. If you can put a crew together from people who know you and know somebody it can be a good way to meet capable people without personality quirks. Or if they do have quirks, you at least have forewarning.

Our makeup artist was also a hair stylist who happened to cut Robert Belushi’s hair. My co-producer and I went to one of Robert’s stage shows and he had heard about the Squarehead web series.

After a customary audition, we cast him in the title role.

The Audition

For our auditions we had a space which was available to host us for free. We saw around twenty actors. I felt the turnout was pretty low and I was used to seeing over a hundred…
